Child & Youth Safety Strategy

Caulfield Grammar School is committed to ensuring the safety, welfare and wellbeing of students and children and is dedicated to ensuring that every child feels safe and protected. The welfare of our students is our highest priority, and we maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards child abuse, reinforcing a secure environment where all children can thrive.

The following information sets out our commitments and code of conduct in relation to providing a safe school where our students can thrive.

Our Child & Youth Safe Policy and Child & Youth Safe Code of Conduct are strengthened through the school-wide strategies we embed, monitor and review – including:
  • Maintaining rigorous recruitment and screening practices for new staff.
  • Inducting new staff, including contractors and volunteers, on our Child and Youth Safe Strategy.
  • Training all staff, including contractors and volunteers, to ensure they are aware of their key responsibilities and know how to recognise, respond to and report child safe concerns.
  • Embedding our Child and Youth Safe Strategy in our boarding premises and residential experiences.
  • Appointing Child and Youth Safety Officers who act as a source of guidance and advice on matters of child safety.
  • Embedding child safe agenda items in all meeting agendas to maintain visibility and prompt ongoing discussion.
  • Structuring risk management processes to identify, monitor and mitigate risks.
    Educating all students about their rights and responsibilities, what to do to stay safe, and how to seek help if they don’t feel safe.

Important child safety information is provided to all students from ELC to Year 12.

In addition to educating our students at school, we also encourage families to educate themselves about child safe matters and have conversations with their children about keeping themselves safe. We provide a number of resources that can support families in exploring child safety further, with topics including, for example:

  • Consent and Respectful Relationships
  • Travel safe
  • Teaching your child about how to keep themselves safe
  • Developmentally appropriate ways to talk to your child about personal safety
  • Staying safe with strangers Considering what to look for in a child safe organisation
  • Links to resources developed by the eSafety Commissioner to support children, young people and their families to stay safe online.

The National Redress Scheme

Caulfield Grammar School is a participant in the National Redress Scheme. The National Redress Scheme provides support to people who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse.

If you are aware of someone who is a survivor of historical child sexual abuse at the School who may not know of the support available, you are encouraged to share this with them.
