Boarding

A co-educational boarding school in metropolitan Melbourne

Caulfield Grammar School has one of the longest-running and most experienced boarding programs in Australia. We are one of the few schools in Melbourne to offer boarding for both girls and boys.

Located just 8km from Melbourne’s vibrant CBD, Caulfield Grammar School’s Caulfield Campus provides boarders with the best of both worlds – an exceptional education and nurturing family environment in one of the world’s most livable cities. Beaches, parks, cafes and shops are all within walking distance, and the city centre is just 15 minutes away by public transport. For rural and international students, it’s a great way to make the most of living in Melbourne.

Meet the Leadership Team

Life in the Boarding House

Morcom House is the centrepiece of our boarding facilities, which extend across a number of buildings on Caulfield Campus and directly across the street on Glen Eira Road. Girls and boys share common recreation and dining facilities, with accommodation in separate boarding houses. This co-educational aspect means that brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews can board at the same school, a feature that is uncommon to many schools.

Accommodation

Our accommodation offers a range of configurations – predominantly singles, doubles and three-bed rooms – to complement the learning program. All Year 12 students are allocated individual rooms.

Common Areas

Boarding accommodation houses have spacious and comfortable common recreational areas, as well as designated study areas.

Meals

All meals are freshly prepared on-site. The Head of Catering at Caulfield Grammar School curates a monthly menu offering healthy, balanced options covering all key food groups. Individual nutritional and medical needs are accommodated, and student feedback is warmly encouraged.

Health Centre

We have a 24/7 onsite Health Centre with registered nurses during the week and on Saturday mornings, and qualified first-aid practitioners onsite on Saturday afternoons and Sunday during the school term.

Weekend Activities

Boarders enjoy access to the School’s extensive sporting facilities – including a gym, weights room, oval, basketball and tennis courts, and indoor pool – as well as a myriad co-curricular activities and clubs, all while experiencing the vibrant culture of one of Australia’s most livable cities.

House System

The House system is an integral part of our School experience. All boarders are members of Morcom House and are encouraged to participate in friendly House events that build a strong spirit of camaraderie and community across year levels and between boarders and non-boarders. Go Team Tangerine!

Leave

Boarding life balances rules and self-responsibility, fostering independence and accountability. Boarders may leave campus with permission via an online system, enabling clear communication between students, families and School administration. Leave types vary by duration and distance and is subject to approval.

Our Boarding Family

Boarding students are the heartbeat of our Caulfield Campus.

We offer co-educational boarding from Years 9 to 12 and accommodate up to 90 students. Our boarding facilities immerse students in a comfortable and welcoming environment that develops the whole student and promotes strong relationships during their crucial adolescent years.

The Boarding Experience

Where our proud history meets your future.

We believe boarding nurtures valuable life skills, building confidence, resilience and independence. Our boarding experience offers a vibrant inclusive community, bringing together staff and young people from different backgrounds, ages and cultures to live and learn together. Since opening our doors to boarders in 1881, Caulfield Grammar School has valued the benefits of a residential community, providing an inclusive ‘home away from home’.

Our Boarding Family

Dedicated Staff

Our boarding staff team nurtures strong relationships with our students and offers guidance and support across every area of development – academic, social, physical and emotional – to ensure each student has everything they need to assist them in their day-to-day life in Melbourne.

Tim Gallop, our Head of Boarding, has been leading our residential community since 1997 and is passionate about providing a safe and happy boarding experience while challenging and guiding students to discover their full potential in all aspects of their school life.

Academic Support

Many of our boarding staff are teachers at the School and can provide academic assistance. This includes promoting academic progress, providing a point of contact between home and school, and giving academic support in their specialist areas.

Classroom teachers often visit the boarding houses to offer after-hours tutoring and to provide additional support with critical tasks such as VCE preparation.

Students are required to take part in scheduled study (homework) periods each weekday. For more details, see A Day in the Life of a Boarder.

Keeping our Families Connected

At Caulfield Grammar School, we prioritise strong communication between staff and families to support student success.

New families are welcomed with a live-in orientation program at Morcom House, helping students transition into boarding life. Families stay connected via REACH, our online portal for boarding updates and leave permissions, and CaulfieldLife, a platform for news and resources.

Our Parents and Friends Group, with a dedicated Boarding Chapter, organises events throughout the year, including the popular Mother’s Day Eve family dinner, fostering connections within the community.

Wellbeing & Pastoral Care

Our pastoral care program supports the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual needs of students and staff, fostering a student-centered approach. We employ staff from diverse backgrounds, ensuring boarders have a range of adults to connect with for advice or support. Students are carefully supervised on campus and can contact supervisors while on leave. This approach ensures students feel supported, creating a safe environment for both personal growth and academic success.

How to Apply
